What Is Anorectal Malformation?

Anorectal malformation, also called ARM, is a congenital condition in which the anus and rectum do not develop in the usual way. The opening may be absent, narrow, positioned differently or connected to the urinary or genital tract. The condition varies from child to child and requires detailed assessment.

How Is It Identified?

ARM is often noticed soon after birth when the anal opening is absent or unusually positioned, or when the baby does not pass stool normally. Some forms may be detected later because of constipation, abdominal swelling, recurrent urinary infection or stool passing through an abnormal opening.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The paediatric surgeon examines the baby and may advise imaging and tests to understand the anatomy and identify associated congenital conditions. Treatment is planned according to the type of malformation. Some babies require an early procedure to allow stool to pass safely, followed by definitive corrective surgery. Others may undergo primary repair.

Long-term follow-up is important for bowel function, constipation management, nutrition, toilet training and urinary concerns.
