Appendix Surgery for Children

Evaluation of suspected appendicitis and paediatric appendix surgery when surgical treatment is required.

What Is Appendicitis?

Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch connected to the large intestine. It can progress quickly in children and may lead to rupture, infection or an abscess if treatment is delayed.

Common Signs in Children

  • Abdominal pain that may begin near the navel and move towards the lower right side.
  • Pain that becomes worse with movement, coughing or walking.
  • Vomiting, loss of appetite or fever.
  • Abdominal tenderness, swelling, diarrhoea or constipation.
  • Irritability or difficulty explaining the location of pain in younger children.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis begins with examination and a review of the child's symptoms. Blood tests, urine tests and imaging such as ultrasound may be advised. Treatment depends on the findings and whether the appendix is uncomplicated, ruptured or associated with an abscess.

Appendectomy is the operation used to remove the appendix. It may be performed through a laparoscopic or open approach based on the child's condition. Antibiotics, pain relief, fluids and post-operative monitoring form part of the treatment plan when required.
