Gallbladder Problems in Children

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. Although gallstones are more common in adults, they can also occur in children. Some children have no symptoms, while others develop repeated pain or complications that require specialist evaluation.

Symptoms That May Need Evaluation

• Pain in the upper right or upper middle abdomen, especially after food.
• Nausea, vomiting or intolerance to certain meals.
• Fever with abdominal pain.
• Yellowing of the eyes or skin.
• Gallstones detected during an ultrasound performed for another reason.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Assessment may include examination, blood tests and abdominal ultrasound. Children without symptoms may not always need immediate surgery. When stones cause repeated pain, inflammation, blockage or another complication, removal of the gallbladder may be advised.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder through small incisions and is commonly considered when surgery is necessary. The final treatment plan depends on the child's symptoms, test results and general health.
