What Is a Paediatric Hernia?

A hernia occurs when tissue or an organ pushes through a weak opening in the surrounding muscle. In children, an inguinal hernia commonly appears as a swelling in the groin or scrotum. An umbilical hernia appears around the navel. The swelling may become more noticeable when the child cries, coughs or strains and may reduce when the child is relaxed.

When Does It Need Urgent Attention?

Parents should seek prompt medical attention if the swelling becomes painful, firm, discoloured or cannot be pushed back, particularly when accompanied by vomiting, abdominal swelling, excessive crying or unusual sleepiness. These symptoms may indicate that the hernia contents are trapped.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A paediatric surgeon usually diagnoses a hernia through clinical examination. An ultrasound or another investigation may be advised when the diagnosis is uncertain. Inguinal hernias generally require surgical repair because they do not close on their own and can become trapped. The need and timing of surgery for an umbilical hernia depends on the child's age, symptoms and the size of the opening.
