Paediatric Tumours

Surgical evaluation of paediatric swellings and tumours, with further investigation and multidisciplinary referral where required.

Understanding Tumours in Children

A tumour is an abnormal growth of tissue. Some paediatric tumours are benign, while others may be cancerous. A swelling or mass does not by itself establish the diagnosis, and careful evaluation is necessary before treatment is planned.

When to Seek Evaluation

  • A persistent or growing lump in the abdomen, neck, chest or another area.
  • Abdominal swelling, pain, vomiting or unexplained weight loss.
  • Blood in urine or another unexplained symptom associated with a mass.
  • A tumour or abnormality detected through ultrasound, CT, MRI or another scan.
  • Referral from a paediatrician, oncologist or another specialist for surgical assessment.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Evaluation may involve imaging, laboratory tests and, when appropriate, biopsy. Treatment depends on the tumour type, location, stage and the child's overall health. Surgery may be used to obtain a diagnosis, remove a tumour or support a wider treatment plan involving paediatric oncology and other specialists.

How Yerra's Superspeciality Hospital Helps

The paediatric surgical team reviews the child's examination findings, scans and reports and explains whether surgical intervention or referral for multidisciplinary care is required. The family receives guidance on the next steps without making assumptions before a confirmed diagnosis.
