Hydronephrosis

Evaluation of swelling of the kidney caused by obstruction or another urinary concern, including cases detected before birth.

What Is Hydronephrosis?

Hydronephrosis means that the kidney's urine-collecting system is enlarged because urine is not draining normally or is flowing backwards. It is often detected on an antenatal ultrasound and can range from mild and temporary to severe.

Symptoms and Evaluation

Many babies have no visible symptoms. Some children may develop urinary tract infection, fever, pain, vomiting, difficulty passing urine or blood in the urine. Evaluation may include kidney and bladder ultrasound and, when needed, tests that assess urine flow, reflux, drainage and kidney function.

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the severity, cause and effect on kidney function. Mild cases may be monitored with repeat scans. Medicines may be used to prevent or treat urinary infection in selected children. Surgery may be advised when obstruction is significant, kidney drainage worsens or complications develop.
