What Is an Undescended Testis?

Before birth, the testes normally move from the abdomen into the scrotum. When one or both remain in the abdomen or groin, the condition is called undescended testis or cryptorchidism. In some babies the testis descends during the first months of life; if it does not, specialist assessment is needed.

Why Is Treatment Important?

Bringing the testis into the scrotum supports examination and may help protect future testicular function. An untreated undescended testis is associated with fertility concerns, twisting of the testis, groin hernia and a higher long-term risk of testicular cancer.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The condition is usually diagnosed by physical examination. Imaging is not always required before referral. Orchidopexy is the operation used to locate the testis, bring it into the scrotum and secure it in position. The surgical approach depends on whether the testis can be felt in the groin or is located inside the abdomen.
